Alaska Nanooks head coach Dallas Ferguson announced the 2010-11 men’s ice hockey schedule Thursday. The program’s 32nd NCAA hockey season includes 34 Division I games, including six against non-conference opponents and 28 against Central Collegiate Hockey Association foes.

Alaska Nanooks senior center Dion ;Knelsen has signed a one-year deal with the Sparta Warriors of Sarpsborg, Norway, and the Norwegian Elite League. The Norwegian Elite League, or Get Ligaen, is the highest tier of professional hockey in Norway and it is there that Knelsen will develop his professional hockey game throughout the 2010-11 season.

The University of Alaska Fairbanks Department of Athletics will host the 26th Annual IBEW Nanook Fund Golf Scramble on June 11 at the North Star Golf Club. IBEW is in its seventh year as the title sponsor for the tournament, which is the major fund-raising event for student-athlete scholarships. Proceeds from the tournament will directly benefit the Alaska Nanooks.

Team Canada’s General Manager Mark Messier announced that former Alaska Nanook goalie Chad Johnson (Calgary AB), of the National Hockey League’s New York Rangers, has been added to the Team Canada roster for the 2010 International Ice Hockey Federation Men’s World Championships, May 7-23, in Cologne and Manheim, Germany.

For the first time in Alaska Nanook hockey history, a player has been named to the Lowe’s Senior Class Award All-Senior All-America First Team. Senior center Dion ;Knelsen (Three Hills, AB, Drumheller (AJHL)) became the second Nanook in the past two years and the third in the award’s four-year history to garner a spot on one of the Lowe’s All-Senior All-America teams.

Senior center Dion ;Knelsen (Three Hills, AB, Drumheller (AJHL)) received six awards, including Steve Moria Most Valuable Player, at the Alaska Nanooks annual hockey awards banquet Saturday night at the Fairbanks Princess Hotel. Six other Nanooks received awards, most of which were decided by a team vote.

Three Alaska Nanook seniors have made the next step in their hockey careers, joining the professional ranks this week. Center Dion ;Knelsen (Three Hills, AB, Drumheller (AJHL)) signed on with the American Hockey League’s Peoria Rivermen and was reassigned Tuesday to the Alaska Aces of the ECHL for the remainder of their season, while his brother Brandon ;Knelsen (Three Hills, AB, Drumheller (AJHL)) and former teammate Dustin ;Molle (Anchorage, AK, Waterloo (USHL)) have signed amateur tryout contracts (ATO) with the Idaho Steelheads.
