Bowling Green earns shut out win against Niagara

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Bowling Green shut out Niagara in non-conference action, Ferris State defeated Minnesota Duluth at the Florida College Classic and Western Michigan earned a tie/shootout win against Michigan State at the Great Lakes Invitational. Michigan lost to Michigan Tech at the GLI, while Miami lost to Robert Morris and Ohio State fell to Penn State at the Three Rivers Classic.
Bowling Green, Ohio – Senior goaltender Andrew Hammond made 38 saves in Bowling Green’s 3-0 shutout of Niagara. Falcons’ junior forward Bryce Williamson and sophomore forward Dajon Mingo each finished with 1-1-2 scoring lines. Junior forward Cam Wojtala also scored for Bowling Green and sophomore defenseman Mike Sullivan had two assists.
Estero, Fla. – Ferris State got goals from six different players and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 6-2 win over Minnesota Duluth in the third-place game at the Florida College Classic. Senior forwards Kyle Bonis and Eric Alexander, junior forwards Justin DeMartino and Cory Kane, sophomore forward Justin Buzzeo and freshman defenseman Brandon Anselmini each had goals for the Bulldogs. Bonis added an assist for a 1-1-2 scoring line, junior forward Andy Huff had two assists and freshman goaltender Charles Williams stopped 23 shots in the win.
Detroit, Mich. – Western Michigan senior forward Mike Leone’s goal in the fourth round of the shootout gave the Broncos a 1-1 tie/shootout win against Michigan State in the first semifinal of the Great Lakes Invitational. The Broncos took a 1-0 lead in the opening period on a goal from senior forward Mike Cichy. Spartans’ sophomore forward Matt Berry tied the game with 16.4 seconds left in regulation. The game remained tied after a five-minute overtime, and the first three shooters for each team were held scoreless in the shootout before Leone scored to send Western Michigan to the GLI championship game against Michigan Tech on Sunday. Broncos’ sophomore goaltender Frank Slubowski made 22 saves, while Michigan State freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 31 shots.
Detroit, Mich. – Michigan Tech freshman goaltender Pheonix Copley made 38 saves in a 4-0 shutout of Michigan in the second semifinal of the Great Lakes Invitational. Michigan junior goaltender Adam Janecyk stopped 32 shots in the loss. The Wolverines face Michigan State in the GLI third-place game on Sunday.
Pittsburgh, Penn. – Robert Morris senior goaltender Eric Levine made 51 saves to shut out Miami, 1-0, in the championship game of the Three Rivers Classic. Miami freshman goaltender Ryan McKay allowed a third-period goal and made 20 saves in the loss.
Pittsburgh, Penn. – Despite a hat trick from sophomore forward Ryan Dzingel, Ohio State fell to Penn State, 5-4, in the third-place game of the Three Rivers Classic. Down 5-3 with four minutes left in regulation, the Buckeyes got an extra-attacker goal from junior forward Alex Szczechura to pull within a goal, but couldn’t get the equalizer. Ohio State freshman goaltender Collin Olson finished with 32 saves.
