Broncos Fall in GLI Championship Game

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Western Michigan fell to Michigan Tech in the championship game of the Great Lakes Invitational while Michigan topped Michigan State in the third-place game.
Detroit, Mich. – Michigan scored four goals in the third period to take a 5-2 win over Michigan State in the third-place game of the Great Lakes Invitational. Sophomore forwards Phil Di Giuseppe and Zach Hyman and freshman forward Andrew Copp all recorded 1-1-2 scoring lines for Michigan while senior defenseman Lee Moffie and senior forward Kevin Lynch each added a goal of their own. For the Spartans, both of their goals came in the opening frame off the sticks of sophomore forward Tanner Sorenson and sophomore forward Matt Berry. Junior goaltender Adam Janecyk made 35 saves in the win for Michigan, while Michigan State freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand blocked 31 shots.
Detroit, Mich. – Michigan Tech captured their first Great Lakes Invitational title since 1980 by defeating Western Michigan, 4-0. The Huskies carried a one-goal lead into the third period before notching three goals in the final frame, including a power-play goal and an empty-net tally. Western Michigan senior forward Mike Leone and junior defenseman Dan DeKeyser earned all-tournament honors while Michigan Tech freshman goaltender Pheonix Copley earned the tournament’s MVP award after posting a shutout in both games and making a total of 70 saves on the weekend.
