CCHA NEWS AND NOTES
Alaska- Rookie Andy Taranto snapped a nine-game goal drought with a hat trick in Friday’s 4-1 win at Ohio State. It was the first three-goal game by a Nanook since Curtis Fraser notched one in a loss to BGSU on Dec. 8, 2006.
Bowling Green- The Falcons, who host Notre Dame this coming weekend, had freshman Jordan Samuels-Thomas score four of their five goals, and a winning shootout tally, in a 4-4 tie and 2-1 loss on the road against the Irish in November.
Ferris State-Senior forward Casey Haines, who has scored in three of the past four games, notched the winning goal in Saturday’s 2-1 victory at LSSU. With a 9-17-26 line, he needs just three more points to match the 13-16-29 totals from his first three seasons.
Lake Superior- The Lakers beat Ferris State, 4-3, on Friday in a wild finish that saw three goals scored in 23 seconds in the final minute of regulation time. Junior Rick Schofield tied the game 10 seconds after the Bulldogs went ahead and assisted on the winning goal 13 seconds later.
Miami-The RedHawks clinched their third CCHA regular-season title with Friday’s 3-2 win at Bowling Green and extended their conference undefeated streak to 22 games (18-0-4) with Saturday’s 10-2 victory over the Falcons.
Michigan-The Wolverines play three of their final four games at Yost Ice Arena, where they are unbeaten in their last eight (7-0-1). Michigan has posted a shutout in three of its last four home games, including two straight.
Michigan State- The Spartans, who go into this weekend’s home-and-home series with Ferris State tied for second place with the Bulldogs, have finished in the top four in the standings in 24 of their 27 CCHA seasons.
Nebraska-Omaha- The Mavericks snapped a six-game Qwest Center winless streak against Michigan and their seniors beat U-M for the first time (0-8-0 previously) with Friday’s 4-3 decision. They completed the program’s first weekend series sweep of the Wolverines with Saturday’s 4-1 victory.
Northern Michigan- Senior Ray Kaunisto’s second goal of the game in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Western Michigan came with 11 seconds left in regulation time and was his team leading, third game-winning goal of the season. Since the calendar turned to 2010, he has 7-7-14 with five multi-point games.
Notre Dame- Irish coach Jeff Jackson needs three wins to reach 300 in his career (297-113-46) and four more to achieve 200 in conference play (196-78-43). His record in his fifth season at Notre Dame stands at 115-61-21.
Ohio State- The Buckeyes, who have been involved in a tie/shootout game in each of their past three series, evened their shootout record at 2-2 on Saturday when Zac Dalpe scored the lone goal and Dustin Carlson thwarted three Alaska shooters.
Western Michigan- The Broncos 2-1 setback at Northern Michigan on Saturday was their seventh one-goal loss this season in 16 conference defeats. They are 0-12-1 away from home in CCHA play.
CCHA- Miami, with 63 points in the standings, has eclipsed the CCHA record of 56 points in a season set by Lake Superior State in 1990-91 in a 32-game schedule when a win was worth two points. Bowling Green owns the best single-season winning percentage at .896 from a 21-2-1 record in 1978-79. The 19-1-4-2 RedHawks would finish with an .893 winning percentage by sweeping their last four regular-season games.
