CCHA ESSENTIAL - "Need to know" items from this week in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association

Alaska- Freshman forward Tyler Morley (5-4-9), sophomore defenseman Trevor Campbell (1-8-9), senior forward Jarret Granberg (3-6-9) and senior forward Andy Taranto (5-4-9) are all tied for the Nanooks’ scoring lead.
Bowling Green- Senior defenseman Bobby Shea scored the lone Falcons’ goal Wednesday in a 3-1 loss at Michigan to snap a nine-game goal drought. Shea’s last goal came on Oct. 19, a 3-1 Falcons’ win on the road against Colgate.
Ferris State- This weekend’s two-game series against Michigan represent the Bulldogs’ only home contests during the month of December and the lone two games in Big Rapids over a two-month span from Nov. 3 - Jan. 5, 2013.
Lake Superior- Junior goaltender Kevin Kapalka recorded his first CCHA start and win of the season during the Lakers’ 3-2 victory over Ohio State on Saturday. Kapalka had been out of the lineup since Oct. 26 after suffering an injury.
Miami- After a weekend off, the first-place RedHawks head to Alaska for a two-game series against the Nanooks. Miami is 2-2-0 on the road this year, all of which are CCHA contests. In those four games, the RedHawks have been outscored 12-10.
Michigan-The Wolverines lost to Cornell, 5-1, in a non-conference game on Saturday at New York’s Madison Square Garden. It was a rematch of last season’s NCAA regional semifinal.
Michigan State- Freshman goalie Jake Hildebrand has made the last three starts for the Spartans and ranks second in the CCHA in save percentage (.941) and third in goals-against average (1.85).
Northern Michigan- The Wildcats won their first shootout of the season after a 2-2 tie with Alaska on Saturday. Northern Michigan lost its first two shootouts this season and hadn’t won a shootout since Feb. 3, 2012 against Ferris State.
Notre Dame- Saturday’s 5-2 win over No. 7 North Dakota closed out a streak of 11 consecutive games for the Irish against teams that were ranked nationally at the time of the game. Notre Dame went 7-4 in those games.
Ohio State- Sophomore forward Tanner Fritz has three consecutive two-assist games and is on a five-game assist streak with eight helpers in the stretch. He leads the Buckeyes with nine assists and 11 points.
Western Michigan- After a weekend off, the Broncos host Northern Michigan this weekend in their second and third conference home games this season. Western Michigan is 1-0-0-0 with a win over Bowling Green at home in CCHA play.
