1993 CCHA Champions - Lake Superior Lakers
Led by junior forwards Brian Rolston, Clayton Beddoes and Wayne Strachan, senior defenseman Michael Smith, sophomore goalie Blaine Lacher and freshman forward Sean Tallaire, Lake Superior finished the 1992-93 regular season in third place (20-5-5) in the 11-team CCHA standings, three points behind second-place Michigan and four points behind first-place Miami.
The Jeff Jackson-coached Lakers, the defending CCHA playoff and NCAA National champions, got four goals from sophomore forward Rob Valicevic to sweep ninth-seeded Illinois-Chicago, 7-2 and 4-2, in a best-of-three first round playoff series to earn their sixth straight trip to Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena to face the Bowling Green in the second round. The Lakers rolled over the Falcons, 7-1, behind Valicevic’s hat trick to set up a semifinal matchup with Michigan. Strachan scored three times and Lacher made 19 saves to lead Lake Superior to a 5-3 win over the Wolverines and a trip to the final for the sixth consecutive year. In the final, Lacher made 17 saves and the Lakers shut out Miami, 3-0, for their third straight CCHA playoff title.
In the NCAA West Regional in Detroit, Lake Superior beat Minnesota Duluth, 4-3, after Rolston scored two goals in 59 seconds. At the Frozen Four in Milwaukee, the Lakers knocked off Boston University, 6-1, before losing to Maine, 5-4, in the national championship game.
As part of the ‘Celebrate the Legacy’ final season, the CCHA is looking for all the players who have their name engraved on the Mason Cup, the CCHA’s playoff championship trophy.
