Lake Superior Blanks Northern Michigan

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Lake Superior blanked Northern Michigan while Western Michigan extended its winning streak to six games. Also, Miami topped Ohio State in a shootout after playing to a 1-1 tie.

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – Junior goaltender Kevin Kapalka blocked all 29 shots he faced, backstopping Lake Superior to a 3-0 shutout win over Northern Michigan. This marks the second straight shutout win for the Lakers. Sophomore forwards Stephen Perfetto and Buddy Robinson, along with junior forward Kellan Lain, all notched 1-1-2 scoring lines, with Lain’s and Perfetto’s tallies coming on the power play. Northern Michigan junior goaltender Jared Coreau and freshman goaltender Michael Doan combined to make 33 saves on the night, with Coreau allowing all three goals.

Columbus, Ohio – Sophomore forward Austin Czarnik scored the lone goal in the shootout as Miami played to a 1-1 tie/shootout win against Ohio State. The game remained scoreless until Ohio State senior defenseman Devon Krogh found the back of the net at the 3:52 mark of the third period. Miami knotted the game at 1-1 off a power-play tally from senior forward Curtis McKenzie, and the game remained tied through the overtime period. Freshman goaltender Jay Williams made 22 saves for Miami and stopped all three shots he faced in the shootout. Ohio State senior goaltender Brady Hjelle had 28 saves on the night.

Ann Arbor, Mich. – Western Michigan improved its winning streak to six games by defeating Michigan, 4-1. Senior forward Ben Warda had a goal and an assist for the Broncos. Senior defenseman Luke Witkowski notched a power-play goal, sophomore forward Justin Kovacs notched his first goal of the season and senior forward Dane Walters sealed the win for Western Michigan with an empty-net tally. The lone goal for Michigan came from sophomore forward Phil Di Giuseppe. Sophomore goaltender Frank Slubowski stopped 23-of-24 shots for the Broncos while Michigan freshman goaltender Steve Racine turned aside 24 shots.
