Lake Superior Sweeps Alaska

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Lake Superior defeated Alaska, 4-2, to sweep the series, while Michigan State and Ferris State both earned wins to split the weekend. Ohio State topped Western Michigan to take four points on the weekend.

Big Rapids, Mich. – Junior forward Garrett Thompson scored the game-winning goal on the power play and added an assist, helping Ferris State to a 4-3 win over Bowling Green to split the series. Sophomore forward Justin Buzzeo also posted a 1-1-2 scoring line, as senior forward Kyle Bonis and junior forward Cory Kane also scored for the Bulldogs. Bowling Green’s tallies came from sophomore forward Adam Berkle, freshman forward Brent Tate and junior forward Brett Mohler. Sophomore goaltender CJ Motte made 26 saves in the win for Ferris State, while Bowling Green freshman goaltender Tommy Burke turned aside 16 shots.

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – Lake Superior junior goaltender Kevin Kapalka’s 33-save performance backstopped the Lakers to a 4-2, sweep clinching victory over Alaska. Sophomore forward Stephen Perfetto and junior defenseman Matt Bruneteau both recorded a goal and an assist, as freshman forward Bryce Schmitt and senior forward Domenic Monardo each added a goal of their own. Junior forward Cody Kunyk and freshman forward Nolan Huysmans both scored for Alaska, with Kunyk’s tally coming with the man advantage. Alaska senior goaltender Steve Thompson made 24 saves in the loss.

Columbus, Ohio – Ohio State junior forward Alex Szczechura notched a hat trick and added an assist, leading the Buckeyes to a 6-3 win over Western Michigan. Sophomore forward Tanner Fritz also had a four-point night, potting a goal and three assists while sophomore forward Max McCormick had a 1-2-3 scoring line. Sophomore forward Darik Angeli rounded out the scoring for the Buckeyes. Western Michigan’s goals came off the sticks of sophomore forwards Justin Kovacs and David Killip and junior defenseman Dennis Brown. Ohio State senior goaltender Brady Hjelle made 22 saves, while Western Michigan sophomore goaltender Frank Slubowski and freshman goaltender Lukas Hafner combined to make 33 saves.

East Lansing, Mich. – Junior forward Lee Reimer tallied a short-handed goal and added an assist, helping Michigan State to a 4-2 win over Northern Michigan to split the series. Freshman forward Michael Ferrantino and senior forward Chris Forfar also scored for the Spartans as sophomore forward Tanner Sorenson buried an empty-net goal to seal the victory. Sophomore defenseman Mitch Jones and senior forward Brian Nugent scored for the Wildcats, with Nugent adding a helper for a two-point night. In goal for Michigan State, freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 18-of-20 shots. At the other end of the ice, Northern Michigan junior goaltender Jared Coreau made 39 saves.
