Lake Superior Sweeps Northern Michigan

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Lake Superior swept Northern Michigan and Miami took five points on the weekend against Ohio State. Notre Dame topped Bowling Green, Michigan State defeated Ferris State and Michigan shutout Western Michigan.
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State snapped a six-game winless streak by defeating Ferris State, 3-1. Sophomore forward Matt Berry opened the scoring for Michigan State, before Ferris State sophomore defenseman Jason Binkley to knot the game at 1-1 entering the third period. It was all Spartans in the final frame, as senior forward Chris Forfar and sophomore forward Tanner Sorenson both found the back of the net. Freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand made 23 saves for the Spartans, while Ferris State sophomore goaltender C.J. Motte blocked 19 shots.
Bowling Green, Ohio – Notre Dame topped Bowling Green, 4-1, to extend their winning streak to six games. Junior forward Bryan Rust and junior defenseman Shayne Taker both tallied power-play goals for the Irish, with Taker adding an assist for a two-point night. Notre Dame junior forwards T.J. Tynan and Mike Voran also potted goals. The lone goal for Bowling Green came from sophomore forward Ryan Carpenter. Junior goaltender Steven Summerhays turned aside 18 shots for the Irish. At the other end of the ice, Bowling Green senior goaltender Andrew Hammond made 28 saves.
Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – Senior forward Nick McParland scored a power-play goal and added an assist, leading Lake Superior to a 3-1, sweep-clinching win over Northern Michigan. Sophomore forward Chris Ciotti scored a power-play goal for the Lakers as junior defenseman Matt Bruneteau also found the back of the net. Northern Michigan’s only goal came from sophomore defenseman Jake Baker, his first of the season. Lake Superior junior goaltender Kevin Murdock made 22 saves on the night, while Northern Michigan junior goaltender Jared Coreau made 34 saves.
Ann Arbor, Mich. – Michigan junior goaltender Adam Janecyk earned his first career victory by stopping all 25 shots he faced, as the Wolverines shutout Western Michigan, 2-0, to split the weekend series. The contest remained scoreless through two periods until Michigan sophomore defenseman Brennan Serville scored his first goal of his career. Freshman defenseman Jacob Trouba added another goal for the Wolverines with the man advantage. Sophomore goaltender Frank Slubowski made 31 saves for Western Michigan.
Columbus, Ohio – Miami freshman forward Riley Barber and sophomore forward Blake Coleman both recorded 1-1-2 scoring lines, leading the RedHawks to a 3-1 win over Ohio State, securing five points on the weekend. Freshman forward Alex Gacek rounded out the scoring for Miami. Ohio State’s only goal came from sophomore forward Max McCormick. Miami freshman goaltender Ryan McKay made 22 saves. For Ohio State, senior goaltender Brady Hjelle turned aside 31 shots.
