Miami Tops Michigan, UNO and WMU Claim Shootout Victories

Farmington Hills, Mich., No. 1 Miami topped No. 4 Michigan in Ann Arbor on Friday night. Nebraska-Omaha and Western Michigan won in shootouts while Ferris State and Northern Michigan both picked up their first conference victories this season. Alaska suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of Notre Dame.
At Ann Arbor, Mich., junior forward Jarod Palmer found the back of the net twice for the No. 1 Miami RedHawks as they defeated No. 4 Michigan, 3-1. Both of Palmer’s goals came before the 9:00 mark of the first period. The RedHawks got their other goal from senior defenseman Brandon Smith. Freshman forward Chris Brown was the lone Wolverine to score a goal on the night. Michigan outshot Miami, 28-13.
At East Lansing, Mich., Terry Broadhurst’s shootout goal lifted Nebraska-Omaha to a win over Michigan State. Broadhurst broke a 1-1 tie in the forth round of the shootout and claimed the victory for his team. The game was tied at three after regulation and overtime. Junior forward Joey Martin led the Mavericks in regulation with a 1-1-2 line. Freshman forward Brent Gwidt and junior forward Matt Ambroz scored the other regulation goals for Nebraska-Omaha. Sophomore forward Mike Merrifield, freshman forward Chris Forfar and senior forward Nick Sucharski scored the Spartan goals.
At Columbus, Ohio, junior forward Mark Olver’s goal just 22 seconds into the game was all Northern Michigan needed to defeat Ohio State, 1-0. Junior forward Phil Fox assisted on Olver’s goal. Sophomore goaltender Reid Ellingson stopped all 32 Buckeye shots to earn the win for the Wildcats. Junior goaltender Dustin Carlson made 34 saves in a losing effort for Ohio State.
At Big Rapids, Mich., four Bulldogs contributed multi-point nights as Ferris State knocked off Bowling Green, 5-1. After a scoreless first period the Bulldogs struck three times on the power play and once at even strength to open up a 4-1 lead after two periods. Senior forward Blair Riley notched two goals. Sophomore defensemen Chad Billins and Brett Wysopal added two assists each and freshman forward Matthew Kirzinger scored once and assisted on another goal for Ferris State. Sophomore goaltender Taylor Nelson made 22 saves in the win for the Bulldogs.
At Kalamazoo, Mich., sophomore forward J.J. Crew was the only player to score in a shootout as the Broncos topped Lake Superior on Friday night. Sophomore forward Fred Cassiani scored an extra attacker goal for the Lakers with seven seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime and ultimately salvaged a point for his team when the game went to a shootout. Western Michigan scored all three of their goals in the first period to gain a 3-0 advantage after 20 minutes. Lake Superior chipped away at the lead for the rest of the night and tied it before regulation time ran out.
At Fairbanks, Alaska, senior forward Ryan Thang scored a goal and added an assist as Notre Dame handed Alaska its first loss of the season, 3-2. Senior defenseman Kyle Lawson scored the game-winning goal on the power play with 2:46 remaining in the second period. Senior forward Christiaan Minella also notched a goal for the Fighting Irish. Senior forward Dion Knelsen and freshman forward Chad Gehon tallied goals for the Nanooks.
