Miami wins to move back into first place

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Miami gained a split with Western Michigan to move back into first place. Michigan State, Ohio State and Northern Michigan also split, while Notre Dame earned a sweep of the Wolverines.

Kalamazoo, Mich. – Miami freshman goaltender Ryan McKay made 29 saves to shut out Western Michigan, 4-0. The win moved the RedHawks back into first place in the conference and earned them a split with the Broncos. Miami got goals from freshman forward Riley Barber, junior forward Max Cook and senior forwards Curtis McKenzie and Marc Hagel. Western Michigan sophomore goaltender Frank Slubowski and freshman goaltender Lukas Hafner combined to make 25 saves in the loss.

East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State junior forward Greg Wolfe scored twice, including an empty-net marker with 32 seconds left in regulation, to lead the Spartans to a 3-1 win over Bowling Green and a split with the Falcons. Sophomore forward Tanner Sorenson also scored for the Spartans. The Falcons’ lone goal came off the stick of junior forward Bryce Williamson. Michigan State freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 27 shots in the win. Falcons’ freshman goaltender Tommy Burke made 15 saves in the loss.  

Marquette, Mich. – Northern Michigan sophomore defenseman Mitch Jones finished with a 1-1-2 scoring line and junior goaltender Jared Coreau made 19 saves in 3-0 shutout win over Ferris State to earn a split with the Bulldogs. The Wildcats also got goals from sophomore forward Reed Seckel and junior forward Stephan Vigier, and senior forward Matt Thurber finished with two assists. Ferris State sophomore goaltender CJ Motte made 30 saves in the loss.

South Bend, Ind., – Notre Dame junior forwards Anders Lee and Jeff Costello each finished with 1-2-3 scoring lines to lead Notre Dame to a 6-4 win over Michigan and a sweep of the Wolverines. The Irish also got goals from junior forwards Bryan Rust and David Gerths and sophomore forwards Peter Schneider and Austin Wuthrich. Michigan’s goals came from sophomore forwards Alex Guptill and Phil Di Giuseppe, senior forward Kevin Lynch and junior defenseman Mac Bennett. Wolverines’ freshman defenseman Jacob Trouba finished with three assists. Notre Dame junior goaltender Steven Summerhays stopped 24 shots in the win, while Michigan freshman goaltender Jared Rutledge and junior goaltender Adam Janecyk combined to make 27 saves in the loss.

Fairbanks, Alaska – Ohio State sophomore forward Ryan Dzingel finished with a 1-1-2 scoring line to lead the Buckeyes to a 3-1 win at Alaska and earn a split with the Nanooks. Ohio State also got goals from sophomore forwards Tanner Fritz and Darik Angeli, who notched the unassisted, game-winner in the third period. The Nanooks’ lone goal came from senior forward Andy Taranto. Ohio State senior goaltender Brady Hjelle stopped 25 shots in the win, while Alaska freshman goaltender John Keeney made 22 saves in the loss.
