Michigan, Miami, Alaska and Michigan State complete weekend sweeps

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich., Michigan, Miami, Alaska and Michigan State completed weekend sweeps on Saturday night. Ohio State won in a shootout over Notre Dame to gain two points in the conference standings and Nebraska-Omaha rebounded from Friday’s shootout loss to pick up a 3-1 win over Bowling Green.
At Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., Michigan scored three times in the first period and three times again in the third period en route to a 6-3 victory over Lake Superior. The win completed a weekend sweep for the Wolverines and improved their record to 2-0-0 in the conference. Junior forward Ben Winnett lit the lamp twice for Michigan. Junior forwards Matt Rust and Louie Caporusso also had two-point nights for the Wolverines. Rust notched a goal and an assist and Caporusso assisted on two goals.
At Marquette, Mich., junior captain Tommy Wingels’ goal at the 14:37 mark of the second period broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game-winner as Miami defeated Northern Michigan, 2-1. Northern Michigan junior forward Mark Olver opened the scoring and gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at the first intermission. Sophomore defenseman Chris Wideman tied the score at one midway through the second period for the RedHawks. Wingel’s game-winner came just 5:11 later and Miami hung on to the lead and improved to 3-0-1 in the conference.
At Kalamazoo, Mich., junior forwards Andrew Rowe and Dustin Gazley recorded a goal and an assist apiece for the Spartans as they knocked off Western Michigan, 5-3. Freshman forwards Anthony Hayes and Dean Chelios, and junior forward Corey Tropp each scored a goal for Michigan State. Hayes added an assist as well. Senior forward Jared Katz found the back of the net twice for the Broncos in the loss.
At South Bend, Ind., the Buckeyes rallied twice from one-goal deficits to force overtime against Notre Dame on Saturday night and then won the shootout to come away with an extra point. Junior forward Hunter Bishop knotted the score at one in the first period and sophomore forward Zac Dalpe tied the score at two in the third period. Bishop also scored the deciding goal in the shootout, a 2-1 win for the Buckeyes. Senior captain Kyle Lawson and freshman forward Riley Sheahan scored the regulation goals for the Irish.
At Omaha, Neb., junior forward Rich Purslow turned the red light on twice for Nebraska-Omaha as they topped Bowling Green, 3-1. Freshman forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas cut the Maverick lead to 2-1 at the 1:51 mark of the third period for the Falcons, but Purslow’s second goal of the night came just 32 seconds later to put the lead back up to two goals. Senior defenseman Eddie Del Grosso scored the second goal for Nebraska-Omaha; it proved to be the game-winner.
At Fairbanks, Alaska, sophomore forward Ron Myers scored with 15 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Nanooks to a 3-2 victory over Ferris State. Freshman forward Andy Taranto and sophomore defenseman Joe Sova tallied goals for Alaska. Senior forward Aaron Lewicki and junior forward Mike Embach put the puck across the goal line for the Bulldogs in the loss. All goals in the game were scored on the power play with the exception of Myers’ overtime tally.
