Spartans Eliminated from CCHA Tournament

Despite battling back from a 2-0 deficit with a pair of goals from junior Andrew Rowe and one from senior Nick Sucharski, the Michigan State hockey team was eliminated from the CCHA Tournament on Saturday evening with a 5-3 loss to Michigan at Munn Ice Arena. UM Gains 1-0 Edge In Quarterfinal Series

Louie Caporusso scored twice and to propel seventh-seeded Michigan to a 5-1 victory over homestanding Michigan State on Friday evening at Munn Ice Arena. Michigan took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three quarterfinal series, and the teams will play again on Saturday evening at Munn Ice Arena. Trio of Spartan Icers Earn All-CCHA Honors

Three Michigan State hockey players have been voted to the CCHA All-Conference Teams, as selected by a vote of the conference's 12 head coaches. The teams were released on Wednesday, and three Spartans have earned Second-Team honors: junior forward Corey Tropp (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.), junior defenseman Jeff Petry (Farmington Hills, Mich.), and sophomore netminder Drew Palmisano (Ann Arbor, Mich.). It is the first All-Conference honor for each of the student-athletes.


Krug Named to CCHA All-Rookie Team

First-year blueliner Torey Krug (Livonia, Mich.) has been named to the CCHA All-Rookie Team, as announced Monday by the league office. In addition, fellow freshman Derek Grant ( Abbotsford, BC) was an All-Rookie Team Honorable Mention pick.


Spartans Draw Michigan in CCHA Quarterfinals

Rick Comley's Michigan State Spartans, which finished second in the CCHA regular season, will host seventh-seeded Michigan in the CCHA Tournament quarterfinal round at Munn Ice Arena March 12-14. The best-of-three series begins Friday at 7:05 p.m.


Tropp Named MVP at Spartan Hockey Banquet

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The Michigan State hockey program handed out its team awards at the annual banquet on Wednesday evening, March 3, at the Kellogg Center. Junior alternate captain Corey Tropp (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.) was named the team's Most Valuable Player as well as capturing the team's Outstanding Offensive Player Award, while senior co-captain Nick Sucharski (Toronto, Ontario) was the only other multiple-award recipient. Sucharski was named the team's Bill Burgess Outstanding Senior Award winner, and also received the Blue Line President's Award, given to the top scholar-athlete in the senior class.


Spartans Finish Second in CCHA Race

Despite skating to a 2-2 tie and losing the extra shootout point, Michigan State locked up second place in the CCHA regular season on Saturday night at Bowling Green. The Spartans, who were eighth and ninth in the pre-season conference polls, finished one point ahead of Ferris State and will now await its playoff opponent when the team hosts a quarterfinal round at Munn Ice Arena March 12-14.

The Spartans play Bowling Green on Friday in a rare 6 p.m. start, but will open the doors for that evening's ticketholders to watch the U.S. game on the video boards. Doors will open at 2:50 p.m. so that fans can cheer on Team USA, led in goal by Spartan great Ryan Miller, as it battles with Finland in the day's first Olympic semifinal.

The buzz has barely died down from the United States beating Canada in Olympic hockey on Sunday evening. It was not only exciting, but historic - it was the first US Olympic victory over its neighbors from the north since 1960. 1956 and 1960 Olympic Photo GallerySitting at home in Findlay, Ohio, former Spartan and 1956 and 1960 Olympian Weldy Olson had a keen appreciation for what Team USA accomplished. After all - he was a member of the only other Olympic teams to defeat the Canadians at their national game.


Spartans Score 3-2 Victory over Ferris State

In front of a sellout crowd of 6,610, No. 12 Michigan State salvaged a series split and snapped a four-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over No. 14 Ferris State. The Spartans got the game winner from junior Dustin Gazley and a 25-save effort from sophomore Drew Palmisano to move back into a second-place tie with the Bulldogs. Michigan State improves to 18-11-5, 13-8-5-2 in conference play.

The 12th-ranked Spartans allowed three second-period markers in the contest, and fall to 17-11-5 overall.
