Northern Michigan Takes Five Points on the Weekend

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Northern Michigan topped Alaska in a shootout to take five points on the weekend. Lake Supeiror and Notre Dame both won to record weekend splits while Michigan fell to Cornell.

Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. - Senior forward Domenic Monardo had a goal and an assist to lead Lake Superior over Ohio State, 3-2. Senior forward Nick McParland and sophomore defenseman Kevin Czuczman also tallied goals for the Lakers. Sophomore forward Darik Angeli and sophomore forward Ryan Dzingel had the Buckeyes’ goals, while sophomore forward Tanner Fritz added a pair of assists. Lakers junior goaltender Kevin Kapalka made 23 saves in the win. Ohio State senior goaltender Brady Hjelle turned aside 26 shots in a losing effort. 

South Bend, Ind. - Sophomore forward Anders Lee and junior forward Jeff Costello each had a 2-1-3 scoring line to propel Notre Dame to a 5-2 win over North Dakota, and a weekend split, in non-conference action. Junior defenseman Kevin Lind potted the fifth goal for the Irish, and junior goaltender Steven Summerhays made 30 saves in the win.

Marquette, Mich. – Sophomore forward Reed Seckel scored the game-tying goal with 8:33 left in regulation, and Northern Michigan skated to a 2-2 tie/shootout win against Alaska. Junior forward Stephan Viger tallied the other Wildcats’ marker and junior goaltender Jared Coreau blocked 34 shots. For Alaska, sophomore defenseman Nolan Kaiser and freshman forward Tyler Morley potted goals, while freshman goaltender John Keeney made 29 saves.

New York, N.Y. - Michigan fell to Cornell, 5-1, in a non-conference contest played at Madison Square Garden. Junior defenseman Mac Bennett potted the lone goal for the Wolverines, with sophomore forward Andrew Sinelli and freshman defenseman Jacob Trouba earning the assists. Freshman goaltender Steve Racine stopped 22 shots in the loss.
