Notre Dame hockey seniors Brett Blatchford (Temperance, Mich.) and Dan Kissel (Crestwood, Ill.) began their professional hockey careers this past weekend. Blatchford signed an Amateur Tryout (ATO) contract with the American Hockey League's (AHL) Chicago Wolves while Kissel signed on with the East Coast Hockey League's (ECHL) Bakersfield Condors.

Notre Dame hockey senior defenseman Kyle Lawson (New Hudson, Mich.) signed a National Hockey League entry-level contract with the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday afternoon. The announcement was made by Jason Karmanos, vice-president and assistant general manager of the Hurricanes. Lawson's two-year contract will begin next season (2010-11). He will join the Hurricane's American Hockey League affiliate in Albany, N.Y., for the remainder of the season on an amateur tryout.

Notre Dame senior defenseman Kyle Lawson (New Hudson, Mich.) has been named an honorable mention selection to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association's (CCHA) postseason all-star team for the 2009-10 season. Junior left wing Calle Ridderwall (Stockholm, Sweden) was the only other Notre Dame player to receive votes in voting done by the conference's coaches.

Notre Dame's 2010 CCHA playoffs got off to a slow start on Friday night as the Irish dropped a 3-1 decision to Ohio State at the OSU Ice Rink. Mathieu Picard scored two goals while Zac Dalpe added a late insurance goal as Buckeyes snapped a 1-1 tie with a pair of third-period goals. Ohio State leads the best-of-three series, one game to none.

Notre Dame finished the 2009-10 season with a series split against Michigan, dropping a 4-0 decision at Ann Arbor on Thursday, Feb. 25 before bouncing back with a 5-3 win on Senior Night at the Joyce Center on Saturday, Feb. 27. That win gave the Irish a 13-15-8 overall record and a 9-12-7-2 mark in the CCHA. Saturday's win coupled with a series loss by Lake Superior State to Northern Michigan, moved Notre Dame into ninth place in the league standings and sends the Irish to Ohio State for a best-of-three first round series with the Buckeyes from Fri., March 5 to Sunday, March 7 (if necessary).

For the second night in a row, Notre Dame took a lead into the third period and couldn't hold it as Bowling Green got the lone goal of the third period to tie the game, 1-1, to force overtime. The game ended in the 1-1 tie with the Falcons getting the extra point in the standings by winning the shootout, 2-1, in front of 2,746 Saturday evening at the BGSU Ice Arena.

For close to 45 minutes on Friday night, things were looking up for Notre Dame as the Irish held a 3-1 lead over Bowling Green at the BGSU Ice Arena. Then, it all came apart as the Falcons scored three times in a 5:12 span to rally for a 4-3 win and hand Notre Dame its third consecutive loss in February.
