OSU, Miami, WMU and Alaska earn weekend sweeps

FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. – Alaska, Miami, Western Michigan and Ohio State each earned weekend sweeps, while Notre Dame defeated Ferris State in conference play and Michigan State lost in non-conference action.

Fairbanks, Alaska – Freshman defenseman Colton Parayko notched a 1-2-3 scoring line, helping Alaska to a 4-2 win over Northern Michigan. The victory clinched a weekend sweep of the Wildcats and extended the Nanooks win streak to six games and unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1). Alaska junior forward Colton Beck recorded a pair of goals and freshman forward Tyler Morley added a goal of his own. For Northern Michigan, sophomore forward Ryan Daugherty found the back of the net and senior defenseman Scott Macaulay scored a short-handed tally. Alaska freshman goaltender John Keeney made 24 saves in the win, while Northern Michigan junior goaltender Jared Coreau and freshman goaltender Michael Doan combined to make 33 saves.

Columbus, Ohio –
Ohio State junior forward Alex Szczechura scored twice to lead the Buckeyes to a 6-1 win over Lake Superior and a sweep of the visiting Lakers. Freshman forward Riley Simpson and junior forward Alex Lippincott each added a goal of their own, and freshman forward Anthony Greco and sophomore forward Ryan Dzingel each finished with 1-1-2 scoring lines for the Buckeyes. Lake Superior’s goal came from sophomore forward Andrew Dommett. Ohio State senior goaltender Brady Hjelle stopped 30 shots, while Lake Superior junior goaltenders Kevin Murdock and Kevin Kapalka combined to make 35 saves.

Kalamazoo, Mich. – Western Michigan scored five unanswered goals to defeat Michigan, 5-1, and complete the Broncos’ first sweep of the Wolverines since 1986. Michigan took a 1-0 first-period lead on a power-play goal from freshman forward Andrew Copp. Western Michigan freshman forward Colton Hargrove finished with two goals, while junior forward Shane Berschbach, freshman defenseman Kenney Morrison and freshman forward Josh Pitt added single markers.  Western Michigan sophomore goaltender Frank Slubowski made 20 saves in the win, while Michigan junior goaltender Adam Janecyk and freshman goaltender Jared Rutledge combined to block 28 shots.

Oxford, Ohio – Miami sophomore forward Jimmy Mullen potted a pair of goals, including one on the power play, to lead the RedHawks to a 3-1 win over Bowling Green and earn a weekend sweep of the visiting Falcons.  Junior forward Bryon Paulazzo also scored for Miami and senior defenseman Steven Spinell and freshman forward Sean Kuraly each had two assists. The lone goal for the Falcons came off the stick of freshman forward Dajon Mingo. Freshman goaltender Ryan McKay stopped 23 shots for Miami, while senior goaltender Andrew Hammond made 31 saves for Bowling Green.

South Bend, Ind. – Notre Dame got goals from five different players in a come-from-behind 5-2 win over Ferris State to gain a weekend split with the Bulldogs.  Junior forward David Gerths, freshman forward Thomas DiPauli, senior forward Kevin Nugent, freshman forward Mario Lucia and junior forward T.J. Tynan scored for the Irish. Goals from junior forward Cory Kane and senior forward Travis Ouellette gave Ferris State a 2-1 second-period lead.  Notre Dame junior goaltender Steven Summerhays stopped 22 shots in the win, while Ferris State freshman goaltender Charles Williams stopped 24 shots in the loss.

East Lansing, Mich. – After goals from junior defenseman RJ Boyd and senior defenseman Matt Grassi gave Michigan State a 2-0 first-period lead, the Spartans gave up three unanswered goals and lost to Penn State, 3-2, in a non-conference game. Michigan State freshman forward Michael Ferrantino had two assists and goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 47 shots in the loss.
