CCHA Teams Sweep Exhibition Openers
Oct. 4, 2008 Farmington Hills, Mich. - The Bowling Green Falcons, Ohio State Buckeyes and Western Michigan Broncos all defeated Canadian opponents while the Michigan Wolverines downed USA Hockey's NTDP Under-18 Team in preseason action on Saturday. At Bowling Green, Ohio, Bowling Green scored five unanswered goals en route to a 5-1 victory over Wilfrid Laurier. Five goals came from five different Bowling Green players inlcuding three defensemen. Wilfrid Laurier's freshman forward Kelly Thomson scored the only goal for the Golden Hawks. Senior defenseman Tim Maxwell tied the game at one, starting the rally for the Falcons. Junior forward Kai Kantola started the third period off scoring the second goal, grabbing the game winner. Senior defensemen Kevin Schmidt and freshman defensemen Nick Bailen also chipped in a goal apiece. At Columbus, Ohio, Ohio State senior forward Zach Pelletier scored three goals lifting the Buckeyes to a 9-3 win over the York Lions. Pelletier, who had two shorthanded goals and the game winner, started the scoring off for the Buckeyes just three minutes into the game. The Lions pulled ahead midway through the second period with goals coming from Rob Labute and Tyler Harrison. Pelletier tied the game at two scoring an unassisted goal with one minute left in the first period. Sophomore defensemen Shane Sims had a goal and two assists, while sophomore forwards Todd Rudasill, Patrick Schafer, and John Albert each supplied two assists. Freshman forward Cory Schneider chipped in a goal and an assist also. At Kalamazoo, Mich., Western Michigan received goals from five different players in defeating the Windsor Lancers 5-1 in exhibition play. Senior forward Patrick Galivan led the Broncos with one goal and two assists. Cam Watson had a shorthanded goal midway through the second period clinching the game winner. Freshman forward J.J. Crew and junior forward Tyler Ludwig also chipped in goals.
At Ann Arbor, Mich., sophomore forward Matt Rust scored back to back power-play goals leading the Wolverines to a victory over the U.S. National Development Team Program's Under-18 squad. Sophomore forward Ben Winnett started the scoring off for the Wolverines on an unassisted goal four minutes into the game. Rust followed with power-play markers in the first and second periods. Freshman forward Robbie Czarnik put the Wolverines up, 4-0. Wolverine sophomore defensemen Chad Langlais and sophomore forward Aaron Palushaj each had two assists on the night.
