RedHawks Beat the Buckeyes, 5-1
Oct. 21, 2007
Farmington Hills, Mich. - Freshman Tommy Wingels scored his third and fourth goals of the season and junior goalie Jeff Zatkoff blocked 24 shots as Miami defeated visiting Ohio State, 5-1 to complete a home-and-home sweep of the first conference series of the season for both teams. Wingels, a 19-year old forward, opened the scoring 7:06 into the game and his RedHawks took a 2-0 lead to the first intermission after junior forward Bill Loupee scored at the 14:22 mark. Junior forward Justin Mercier, who scored twice in Friday's 5-1 win by Miami at Ohio State, made it 3-0 at 9:33 of the second period. Senior forward Tommy Goebel got the visitors on the board with a power-play marker at 11:25. But junior defenseman Alec Martinez answered with a RedHawks power-play goal just two minutes and 24 seconds later. Wingels capped the scoring in the third frame. Miami junior goalie Jeff Zatkoff made 24 saves and Ohio State junior Joseph Palmer turned aside 33 shots. The RedHawks, who host Nebraska-Omaha next weekend, improve to 4-0-0 on the season while the Buckeyes, who are headed to Minnesota for non-conference action, fall to 2-2-0.
