At Farmington Hills, Mich., No. 2 Miami beat Nebraska-Omaha and No. 3 Michigan was victorious over Boston University. No. 12 Notre Dame topped Ferris State while Michigan State outlasted Northern Michigan. Western Michigan fell to Niagara and No. 14 Ohio State was defeated by No. 10 Minnesota. Lake Superior was shutout to No. 8 Clarkson.

At Big Rapids, Mich., sophomore Ryan Thang scored the winning goal for No. 12 Notre Dame in the Irish's 3-2 victory over Ferris State Friday night. ND jumped out to a 3-0 lead on scoring from senior Evan Rankin in the first period and freshman Ben Ryan and Thang in the third period. Ferris State junior Corey Couturier netted two goals for the Bulldogs at 10:31 and 19:04 of the final stanza, but FSU was unable to tie the game before time expired. FSU freshman Scott Wietecha earned his first career point with an assist on Couturier's first goal. The Irish won 42-of-66 faces-offs in the contest.

Jordan Pearce recorded 25 saves for Notre Dame, while freshman Pat Nagle stopped 31 shots for Ferris State, including 25 in the first two periods. The teams play again Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

At East Lansing, Mich., No. 9 Michigan State scored four goals in the second period to narrowly beat Northern Michigan, 5-4.

The Wildcats struck first on a goal from junior Nick Sirota from Jared Brown and Gregor Hanson, but the Spartan's tied the game with a power-play tally by junior Justin Abdelkader. Michigan State took a 5-1 lead in the second period. Freshmen Andrew Rowe and Corey Tropp recorded their first collegiate goals. Juniors Matt Schepke and Tim Kennedy also scored in the middle frame. Senior Daniel Vulkovic notched two assists.

Northern Michigan didn't let up, however, scoring three times in the third period. Sophomore Ray Kaunisto scored his first two goals of the season, including one with the extra attacker with 22 seconds left in the game. The two teams meet again Saturday night at 7:05 p.m.


 

 

At Oxford, Ohio,
senior Ryan Jones and junior Justin Mercier each scored two goals to power No. 2 Miami to a 7-2 win over Nebraska-Omaha. Mercier is now tied to first place in scoring in the CCHA, posting six goals and an assist in just five games.

Mercier put Miami on the board first with a shorthanded tally at 18:23 of the first period. Nebraska-Omaha. Senior Mick Lawrence tied the game early in the second period on a power-play, but the RedHawks scored three straight, including Mercier's second and two from Jones. Freshmen Vincent LoVerde and Pat Cannone recorded their first collegiate points on Jones' first goal. Junior Dan Charleston scored for the Mavericks with five minutes left in the second frame. The third period, however, was all Miami. Freshman Carter Camper notched his first career goal with a shorthanded effort. Senior Charley Fetzer lit the lamp on a RedHawk power-play and junior Brian Kaufman chipped in as well.

Senior net minder Charlie Effinger made 33 saves for Miami. Sophomore Jeremie Dupont recorded 17 saves for the Mavericks. The RedHawks look to remain unbeaten in Saturday's 7:05 p.m. rematch with Nebraska-Omaha.

At Niagara, N.Y., Matt Caruana scored twice for Niagara to defeat Western Michigan, 4-2 on Friday, despite being outshot 44-22 by the Broncos. NU's Egor Mironov notched the first goal, just 44 second into the game, but Western Michigan freshman Ryan Watson scored short-handed less than a minute later. Caruana recorded a power-play goal in the second period and a short-handed goal of his own in the third period to put the Purple Eagles ahead by two. Senior Brian Bicek brought the Broncos back to within one goal at 11:25 into the third frame, but Niagara would score one more before the end of the match. WMU will look to even the weekend series Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

At Minneapolis, Minn., despite a 33-20 edge in shots on goal, No. 14 Ohio State fell to tenth-ranked Minnesota, 2-1, on Friday. With the win, the Golden Gophers earn a series sweep of the Buckeyes. Minnesota got a first period score from Justin Bostrom and a second period goal off the stick of Jay Bariball. Ohio State threatened in the third period when senior Kyle Hood found the back of the net for the first time this season at 8:23.

Gopher goaltender Alex Kangas made 32 saves in the game, while sophomore Joseph Palmer stopped 18 shots for Ohio State in the loss.

At Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., seven different players recorded points for Clarkson as the No. 8 Golden Knights blanked Lake Superior, 4-0. Junior Chris D'Alvise had a 5-on-3 power-play goal and an assist. Clarkson also scored two special teams goals in the third period, including one shorthanded. Senior David Leggio stopped all 19 Laker shots. Sophomore Pat Inglis made 21 saves in the loss. The Lakers will try for the series split Saturday at 7:05 p.m.

At Ann Arbor, Mich., freshman Matt Rust scored twice and junior Kevin Porter had a goal and an assist to power No. 3 Michigan past Boston University, 4-2. Rust now has four goals in five games this season for the Wolverines.

The game remained scoreless after one period of play before Rust lit the lamp, with help from junior Tim Miller at 12:06 of the second frame. Freshman Aaron Pulashaj gave Michigan a two-goal lead just a minute later. Jason Lawrence brought BU within one with a power-play tally at 2:47 of the third period, but Rust responded with a power-play goal of his own. Dan McGoff again cut the deficit to a goal at 11:34 of the third before Porter found the back of the net for Michigan. Freshman Max Pacioretty notched his first career point with an assist.

Junior goaltender Billy Sauer made 30 saves for the Wolverines including 15 in the first period. The two teams will meet again Saturday at 8:35 p.m.
