Farmington Hills, Mich. – Four of the five conference contests were one-goal games on Friday night with Bowling Green edging Northern Michigan, 2-1 in overtime, Western Michigan defeating Michigan, 2-1, Ferris State beating Nebraska-Omaha, 3-2 and Notre Dame and Lake Superior tied 3-3, with the Irish winning the shootout. Miami continued its strong start with a 5-1 win at Michigan State. Ohio State blanked Robert Morris, 4-0, in non-conference action at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena.

At Bowling Green, Ohio, sophomore forward David Solway scored his second goal of the night at 1:57 of overtime to give the Falcons a 2-1 decision over Northern Michigan. The Wildcats scored first with a goal from sophomore forward Gregor Hanson and junior goaltender Brian Stewart made 48 saves on the night. Both Bowling Green goals were assisted by senior forward Brandon Svendsen and sophomore forward Dan Sexton.  

At East Lansing, Mich., conference scoring leader Pat Cannone, fellow sophomore forward Andy Miele and senior captain Brian Kaufman all had a goal and an assist to power Miami to a 5-1 victory at Michigan State. Senior forward Matt Schepke got the Spartans on the board first before the RedHawks fired five unanswered goals. Senior forward Justin Mercier and senior defenseman Raymond Eichenlaub, with his first of the season, got the other Miami markers.

At Ann Arbor, Mich., freshman defenseman Kevin Connauton scored at 15:38 of the third period to lift Western Michigan past Michigan, 2-1. Connauton also assisted on his team’s first goal scored by freshman forward Ian Slater. Sophomore forward Carl Hagelin was the only Wolverine to put the puck past Western Michigan junior netminder Riley Gill who made 33 saves on the night.

At South Bend, Indiana, the longest shootout so far in conference play, four rounds, saw Notre Dame gain an extra point following a 3-3 tie with visiting Lake Superior as the Irish topped the Lakers, 2-1, in the shootout. LSSU got regulation-time goals from junior defenseman Simon Gybers, junior forward Nathan Perkovich and senior forward Josh Sim. Junior forward Christiaan Minella and sophomore forwards Ben Ryan and Ryan Guentzel replied for the Irish. Senior goalie Jordan Pearce made 40 saves, including four in overtime, and stopped three of the four Lake Superior shootout attempts.

At Omaha, Nebraska, the Bulldogs scored a goal in each period to defeat the Mavericks, 3-2. Junior forward Aaron Lewicki and sophomore forward Nate Hennig each notched a goal and an assist for Ferris State. Sophomore forward Mike Embach snapped a 2-2 tie at 8:07 of the third period for the Bulldogs while sophomore defenseman Scott Wietcha picked up two assists and freshman goalie Taylor Nelson made 29 saves. Senior forward Tomas Klempa and sophomore defenseman Nick Von Bokern got tallies for Nebraska-Omaha.

At Pittsburgh, Penn., sophomore goalie Dustin Carlson made 32 saves for his second shutout in three games as Ohio State posted a 4-0 win over Robert Morris at Pittsburgh’s Mellon Arena. Sophomore forward Hunter Bishop opened the scoring for the Buckeyes, freshman forward Ian Boots and senior forward Zach Pelletier added second-period goals with freshman Taylor Stefishen notching his first career goal in the third frame.
