Miami And Ferris State Earn Tournament Championships

At Farmington Hills, Mich. - Miami captured the Ohio Hockey Classic championship with a 3-2 win over Ohio State. Ferris State shutout Connecticut, 5-0, to win the UConn Hockey Classic. Notre Dame earned third-place honors in the Lightning Classic with a 3-1 win over Rensselaer. The consolation game of the Catamount Cup ended in a 1-1 tie between Western Michigan and Holy Cross. Princeton topped Nebraska-Omaha, 5-3, in a non-conference match-up. At Columbus, Ohio, Miami sophomore Gary Steffes tallied the game-winner with 1:38 left in regulation as the RedHawks captured the championship of the Ohio Hockey Classic beating Ohio State, 3-2. Senior Ryan Jones knocked in his 17th of the season on the power-play and sophomore Jarod Palmer scored shorthanded for Miami in the first period. Freshmen Kyle Reed and John Albert lit the lamp for the Buckeyes. At Storrs, Conn., Ferris State sophomore Blair Riley netted a hat trick and junior goaltender Mitch O'Keefe made 23 saves for the Bulldogs as they shutout Connecticut, 5-0, in the championship of the UConn Hockey Classic. Riley notched the first two goals of the contest before sophomore Casey Haines and junior J.T. Dahlinger scored in the third period. FSU sophomore Cody Chupp assisted on each of Riley's markers.
At Tampa, Fla., junior Erik Condra and sophomore Ryan Thang each recorded a goal and an assist in Notre Dame's 3-1 victory over Rensselaer in the third-place game of the Lightning Classic. Condra lit the lamp just 1:04 into the contest and Thang netted the game-winner midway through the first period. Senior Evan Rankin scored in the empty-net for the Irish. Kurt Colling tallied the lone goal for R.P.I. Notre Dame Jordan Pearce stopped 19-of-20 shots. At Burlington, Vt., Holy Cross' Everett Sheen scored the shorthanded game-tying at 17:59 of the third period to force a 1-1 overtime tie with Western Michigan in the Catamount Cup consolation game. Senior Mike Lesparance broke the scoreless deadlock at 9:37 of the third period for the Broncos. Freshman netminder Jerry Kuhn made 30 saves in the match. At Omaha, Neb., Princeton rallied for four third-period goals to upend Nebraska-Omaha, 5-3, in non-conference play. The Mavs, who outshot the Tigers 25-15, took a 2-1 lead into the second intermission on scores from senior Mick Lawrence and sophomore Dan Swanson. Mark Magnowski netted the game-winning goal for Princeton with a shorthanded effort. Senior Brandon Scero also had a goal for UNO. |
