"'HOCKEY DAY' IN MICHIGAN SET FOR FEBRUARY 14"
The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced today the fourth annual Hockey Day in Michigan will take place on February 14, 2009. The CCHA, FSN Detroit, the Detroit Red Wings and the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association will once again join forces to bring a coast-to-coast celebration of the sport of hockey to participants and fans across the Great Lakes State. Events Around the State
- "Have Fun, Play Hockey" clinics at Novi Ice Arena and Suburban Ice - Farmington Hills.
- Two college hockey games will be televised on FSN Detroit, including Ohio State at Michigan State at 5:05 p.m. followed by Nebraska-Omaha at Michigan at 8:05 p.m.
- Suburban Ice - Macomb will be celebrating Hockey Day in Michigan with concession specials, Hockey Day buttons, a Why I Love Hockey picture contests (forms can be picked up at the front desk) - the winner will receive a Suburban Hockey Schools gift certificate, two open skate sessions (2:45 p.m. - 4:35 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. - 10:05 p.m.) and attendees who wear a hockey jersey will receive half off admission. SI-Macomb will also have MVP Grams, which will be posted in the arena during the month of January in honor of Hockey Day, to acknowledge those who make playing hockey fun and thank them for making it possible!
- Novi Ice Arena will be having a Skills Competition from 12 p.m. - 2 p.m. Anyone wearing a hockey jersey to open skate from 3 p.m. - 5 p.m. will receive $1 off admission. Staff will be wearing hockey jerseys and all TVs will be tuned in to hockey-related programming.
- Hockey Day in Michigan is getting an early celebration in Grand Rapids. District 6 Associations are being invited to participate in a 3-on-3 Cross Ice Jamboree. If your team is interested in participating on January 31, between 10 am and 5 pm at Van Andel Arena, please contact Mike Slobodnik at (616) 735-6286. The deadline is December 1 to confirm participation.
- The Mike Modano Ice Arena located in Westland will be hosting a myriad of events in celebration of Hockey Weekend Across America. On Friday, Feb. 13, the arena will host a Valentine Glow Skate from 7:30 p.m. - 8:50 p.m. on Hockey Day in Michigan, they will also have a Skills Competition from 12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m. to feature the fastest skater, hardest shot and most accurate followed by an open skate at 2:00 p.m. - 3:20 p.m. Bring in your Red Wings drawing and only pay $2.00. The Mike Modano Ice Arena is continuing the celebrations into Monday & Tuesday with hockey clinics on Feb. 16 and a Buy One, Get One Free Open Skate from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Tuesday there is a Learn to Skate Class from 12:00 p.m. - 1:00 p.m. followed by another Open Skating session. - The Grand Traverse Hockey Association is having a "Skillympics" on Feb. 14 from 8 am - 4 pm at Centre Ice in Traverse City. This is the fourth year of doing it, and it is conjunction with "Hockey Day in Michigan". Competitions include skating, passing, shooting, goaltending and speed.
- The Detroit Hockey Association in conjunction with the NHL, Detroit Recreations Department, Red Wings Foundation, Howard Baker Foundation presents its 5th Annual Hockey in the Hood. For more information, call (313) 727-7330 or visit www.detroithockey.org. The Stanley Cup and Jack Adams trophy will be available Saturday, February 14 from 11 am - 7 pm. Pictures are available for $10. The vendor show is from 9 am - 5 pm. Game times are Friday, 9 am - 5 pm'; Saturday, 7 am - 5 pm and Sunday TBD. The Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA), FSN Detroit, Detroit Red Wings, RBK hockey and Perani's Hockey World are providing the opportunity for boys and girls ages 5-11 to experience the excitement of playing organized hockey for the first time at no charge. Sign up for a "Have Fun, Play Hockey Clinic" at one of the CCHA home arenas or one of the Metro-Detroit locations. Equipment will be provided to all participants and professional instructors will be teaching the clinic. Boys and girls ages 5-11 are getting the chance to learn to play hockey for free in CCHA member school locations as well as local arenas throughout the state of Michigan between December and February as part of the Hockey Day in Michigan celebration. An hour of group and one-on-one ice drills teaching the fundamentals of the game sent participants home with big smiles and an urge to continue to play the game that over 70,000 players in Michigan are already playing.
