Western Michigan and Miami earn shutouts and sweeps

Farmington Hills, Mich. – Western Michigan, Miami, Ohio State and Notre Dame earned weekend sweeps, while Michigan skated to a tie/shootout win at Ferris State.
Kalamazoo, Mich. – Western Michigan senior forward Trevor Elias scored the only goal of the game and sophomore goaltender Frank Slubowski made 23 saves as the Broncos shut out Northern Michigan, 1-0, to complete the weekend sweep of the Wildcats. Northern Michigan junior goaltender Jared Coreau stopped 37 shots in the loss.
Fairbanks, Alaska – Freshman goaltender Ryan McKay stopped all 26 shots he faced to lead Miami to a 4-0 shutout win over Alaska and a weekend sweep of the Nanooks. A trio of RedHawks had multi-point nights led by senior forward Marc Hagel, who scored the first two goals of his Miami career after transferring from Princeton. Sophomore forward Jimmy Mullin had a 1-1-2 scoring line and sophomore forward Austin Czarnik added two assists. Sophomore forward Alex Wideman also scored for Miami. Alaska freshman goaltender John Keeney made 23 saves in the loss.
East Lansing, Mich. – Ohio State fell behind, 1-0, before scoring three straight goals to take a 3-1 win at Michigan State and complete the weekend sweep of the Spartans. Buckeyes’ sophomore forward Tanner Fritz had a 1-1-2 scoring line and freshman forward Tyler Lundey scored twice, including a short-handed empty-netter with 21 seconds left in the game. Ohio State sophomore forward Ryan Dzingel finished with two assists. Michigan State senior forward Chris Forfar scored his first goal of the year in the opening period. Ohio State senior goaltender Brady Hjelle made 22 saves, while Spartans’ freshman goaltender Jake Hildebrand stopped 21 shots.
South Bend, Ind. – Freshman forward Mario Lucia scored twice and junior forward Bryan Rust recorded a 1-2-3 scoring line as Notre Dame defeated Lake Superior, 6-1, and completed a weekend sweep of the Lakers. Junior forward Anders Lee scored his league-leading 10th goal of the season for the Irish, who also got goals from junior forward T.J. Tynan and junior defenseman Stephen Johns. Notre Dame junior defenseman Shayne Taker finished with three assists, while senior goaltender Mike Johnson and junior goaltender Steven Summerhays combined to make 26 saves. Sophomore forward Kelin Ainsworth scored the Lakers' lone goal, while junior goaltenders Kevin Kapalka and Kevin Murdock combined to stop 26 shots in the loss.
Big Rapids, Mich. – Senior forward Lindsay Sparks had a 1-1-2 scoring line to lead Michigan to a 3-3 tie/shootout win at Ferris State. The Wolverines also got goals from freshman forward Boo Nieves and senior forward A.J. Treais, who notched his league-leading 10th of the season. Senior forward Kyle Bonis scored twice and sophomore defenseman Jason Binkley added a single goal for the Bulldogs, who came back from a 3-1 deficit. Michigan freshman goalie Steve Racine stopped 36 shots, while sophomore goaltender CJ Motte made 39 saves for Ferris State.
